“It is the possibility of having a dream come true that makes life interesting.”- Paulo Coelho.

Dreams are beautiful. They make human life so interesting. It is the desire and sense of achieving something that we truly want and believe in that makes life so exciting.

But yes, what are dreams? Those that you have while asleep? Cristiano Ronaldo put it so elegantly, “Dreams are not what you see in your sleep , dreams are things which do not let you sleep.” Dreams are the ambitions that you have for your life. The things you want out of your own  life. Goals for life in a sense.

Yeah one intriguing question. All of us evolved over centuries from animals to the present day humans. But yes what truly differentiates us from animals? The ability to work hard? No a donkey can do it well enough. Then the courage that we have within? A tiger is quite courageous too. Then what?   Dreams. What makes us so unique is our ability to dream. Just observe animals. They are habit-oriented creatures. All they want is nourishment and sleep. Nothing else. They don’t do anything new. Everyday of their existence is almost the same. It might be that sometimes they are more tired and sometimes they are not. Just that. They aren’t doing anything new. But why?  Because they don’t expect anything new out of their lives. Because they don’t have dreams. All they desire is existence. You don’t reach Paris boarding a flight to Singapore. You get what you ask for. You get what you deserve.

And yes following our dreams is not some outworldly skill. Yes it takes courage and hard work. Courage because sometimes we need to swim upstream in our quest of realizing our dreams and hard work because as Colin Powell said “A dream doesn’t become reality through magic; it takes sweat, determination and hard work.”. Walking in a crowded plaza is easy but walking through a lonely forest path takes up courage. Most people explore already discovered places , dreamers blaze new horizons.

If following our dreams is not that easy, why have them in the first place? Not having them would be so good. We’ll neither have to work hard chasing them nor will we have to display shows of courage against the odds that would cross our path to our dreams. Wait! This is an absolutely wrong perspective of life. Do you love a Ferrari? Do you enjoy the experience of using an Apple product? Oh yes all of us do. Why do we do so? We don’t love a Ferrari for it just being there in our driveway. We love it for its speed. We don’t love an Apple product just for its presence but we love it for its performance. That’s the answer. We are so gifted, we’ve been given this life on this planet with all the worldly resources available to us not just to go through life respiring and metabolising. Performance is our duty. We are all Ferraris in a sense but we need to take care that we all perform accordingly because a non functioning Ferrari doesn’t make any difference.

”Good journeys are made to destinations but great ones are made for a purpose.” So if life is a journey , chasing our dreams is its purpose. Dreams are essential for a meaningful life.

One more thing. If we closely look at the working of the universe, we get to see something literally astonishing. Everybody works the same. Oh yes! Everybody has to complete his virtual quota of hard work on this planet. The only thing is : some do it following their dreams and some do that regretting their buried potential. Now the decision is in our own hands. On which side of the bifurcation would you like to be?

Everything starts with a dream. Always remember something that Rumi said long ago ,  “You are not a drop in the ocean but the whole ocean in a single drop.”
